It’s only been playing in domestic theaters for around 20 days, but Wicked: For Good has already overtaken every film in the blockbuster Twilight Saga. In many ways, the two Wicked films have been just as massive a cultural phenomenon as the Twilight series was around a decade ago. The first Wicked, which debuted last year, went on to gross around $475 million domestically, and is currently the second-biggest fantasy hit in box office history. It didn’t do as well internationally, which can be explained by the source material’s inaccessibility outside America. But still, the first Wicked made more than $700 million worldwide, which should be a good target for Wicked 2. Both movies have been directed by Jon M. Chu, although the first one was considerably better-received than the sequel.
